Moving with Intention: Exploring AI Equity Findings and Building Your Next Steps

The Equity & AI Learning Series is a six-session collaborative learning initiative led by Cooperation Canada, in partnership with Salanga, created in response to the rapid adoption of AI across the non-profit and international cooperation sector.

76% of non-profits are using AI in some capacity, up from 59% in 2024. Yet, only 15% have any AI policy or governance in place!

In Session 1, facilitated by Meena Das, CEO Namaste Data and lead researcher of the AI Equity Project, we sat down with development practitioners across the world to explore what responsible, equity-centred AI use looks like in practice, while reflecting on a deeper question:

Will AI widen inequities in our work or help reduce them?

The answer, as participants agreed, depends on how we choose to use it.

Drawing from real data from 850 nonprofit organizations, we explored core findings from the AI Equity Project, approaches and equity considerations, practical starting points that non-profits could take, regardless of size, budget or level of AI use and so much more.

So, whether you missed the session or are looking to carry the lessons forward in your own team conversation, we’ve synthesized the key insights, tensions, reflections and recommendations for you.
